Author of Afterlife An Introduction to Dante s Inferno and Penance In Introduction to Dante s Purgatory Keyboard player in Los Angeles area Dante s Divine Comedy is an incredible trip through the afterlife Yet it s audience is often restricted to academics or those with the time to do the necessary research to understand the poem Penance An Introduction to Dante s Purgatory is David Lafferty s exploration of Dante s Purgatory for those of us who want to an understandable enjoyable introduction to this amazing literary masterpiece Lafferty takes us into the world of Purgatory a world of transformation and purification The book also includes beautiful imagesintroductory material as well as pointing out much of the symbolism and allegory of the poem A great starting point for new readers of Dante David Lafferty is the author of Afterlife An Introduction to Dante s Inferno Penance An Introduction to Dante s PurgatorySimple Affection Doing HonourDavid Lafferty Penance An Introduction to Dante s PurgatoryThis newly published work continues the author s hope to usher the monumental and yet still relevant classic towards a new readership To that end it is delightfully accessible beautifully spacious in both its pace and its physical appearance Unlike many academic works no knowledge is assumed but there is none of that listen up condescension What is conveyed from the start is Lafferty s love for the work his long absorption in its layers of symbolic meaning and historical references his awareness of other authorities and many translations yet this weight is worn very lightly He offers it as a good cook might in spoonfuls for the palate of a willing but un knowledgeable appetite Try this And what about this I ve added a hint of spice here sharpens the flavour doesn t it It would be easy to miss the gentle statements of both Lafferty s opinions and his handed out assistance to scale the layers of meaning From the outset we are told that unlike Inferno in which there is no escape Purgatory is fundamentally optimistic all will eventually be delivered from it and for those of us who do not speak Italian he makes clear optimism is expressed in the music of the words as much as in the clarity of time bound penance The cosmology of the whole work is clarified and illustrated Inferno the narrowing cone of increasing darkness where the punishments fit the crimes forever whereas Il Purgatorio is scaled only in daylight on the outside terraces of a peak rising towards the sun and towards Paradise Symmetry rules at every point in the physical dimensions two cones one inner one outer placed in opposite hemispheres and causally interrelated and in the karmic consequences of sin where punishment in hell is to be condemned to of the same as opposed to purgatory whereby the opposite experiences prevail to achieve an equipoise and detachment by which to ascend Balance is all Art is always a matter of celebrating balance and here it is applied to inner balance. EPub penance lane An interesting point about so called lesser crimes which are encountered on the higher narrower and precipitous levels is the recognition that for precisely that reason they are tempting and easier to cause deviation from the path to Paradise The higher one climbs the easier to fall There are many contemporary reports of so called spiritual gurus acceding to lust are there not Within this structure Lafferty clarifies the work s reflection of medieval and monastic disciplines broadens knowledge about the characters mentioned and why Dante selected them as illustrative of particular venal or mortal crimes He makes very clear what a liberal Dante was in drawing fine distinctions and challenging Catholic doctrine almost always replacing black and white with shades of grey His classical references and mythological symbolisms are clarified but only as far as makes for greater understanding of the journey Dante was undertaking There is no knowledge for knowledge s sake and the appeal of this work lies as much in that restraint as in the gorgeous illustrations paintings for the most part little known What interested this reviewer was the incredible relevance of Dante s insights to modern psychology and Eastern religious traditions in which the soul is persecuted not by external diktat but by its knowledge of wrong doing Virgil the pagan has no choice but to remain in limbo simply for want of the knowledge of Christ but is both recognized and welcomed by many who knew his gifts and gentleness Denying him access to Paradise causes Dante the traveler grief Here obedience to belief has a creative necessity Virgil would have been one too many once Beatrice appears Purgatory is for the repentant whereas Inferno is filled with those sinners without remorse This distinction is worked at finer and finer degrees and although superficially it follows Catholic Doctrine on absolution Dante clearly had experienced Papal fallibility he was exiled for life on specious charges by Pope Boniface his family were the wrong colour of Guelphs he had no inhibitions in playing God in matters of creative absolution or the opposite condemnation As I think I remarked in an opinion on the Inferno one can only envy that liberty now I can think of many suitable punishments for the greed of politicians or corrupt abuses of trust I would however be unwise to name them in a novel. Penance brand poe To conclude This is a affectionate sharing of the Author s enthusiasm and offered in a way that imposes no heavy demands but certainly invites deeper knowledge of the original text if only to explore its contemporary relevance That makes the epic both friendly and inviting and this book suggests its rewards to discover for oneself why it remains a classic and a source of inspiration to both artists and philosophers David Lafferty has built a new bridge for a new readership but one slender enough to keep good sight of the Commedia s structure and inspiration and leaves the surrounding hills of monastic life and mediaeval belief all visible and alive The illustrations are sumptuous but also celebratory because they all continue to share what this amazing work has inspired in others David Lafferty
