Book the black tax The Black Gate picks up exactly where The Chamber left off Kal and Daine find themselves back in the world where they first met But things have changed Daine s world is dying and the Reaper s arrochom are expecting them Once again the story is told in an alternating third person narrative This gives the book pace Action levels are high particularly at the beginning and end In the middle the description and history become somewhat denser pure action junkies may need to skim over these sections but this hits the spot for fantasy readers who need to understand the rules of new worlds As with The Chamber Kal and Daine spend some time together and some apart The development of their relationship is one of the strongest undercurrents to the book as is a broad environmental conservation theme which sounds odd but works There are some brutal twists and the suspense is right up there again I feel this series is building towards a crescendo nicely I really hope so as there are lots of questions still outstanding for me and some key characters from The Chamber the Jade Sorceress Juquor for example who are only briefly mentioned in this instalment The series is certainly aimed at young adults as the main characters are 18 20 years old but I cannot classify myself in this category any and so would recommend it to an older fantasy crowd as well Dominic H King
